Wajar, perjuangan itu tidak sia-sia mengingat Semenov menghabiskan waktu dua tahun di White Sea Biological Station, Rusia.



Semenov berhasil mendokumentasikan perbedaan mencolok antara spesies yang di bawah es itu dengan spesies sama namun telah berevolusi karena hidup di perairan hangat seluruh dunia. Semenov mengatakan, seperti dikutip dari Daily Mail, fauna laut di laut dingin tidak memiliki kemiripan apapun dengan spesies yang sama namun hidup di dunia yang ‘berbeda’. Ia tidak pernah menemukan makhluk hidup ini sebelumnya.

“Ketika saya pergi ke bawah air untuk pertama kali, saya benar-benar terkejut. White Sea benar-benar menunjukkan kepada saya sebuah dunia alien. Beberapa diantaranya merupakan makhluk yang luar biasa,” kata Semenov lagi.

Penampakan tersebut termasuk kerangka udang pink cerah, malaikat laut aneh dan kupu-kupu laut yang mirip bekicot. Selain itu ada pula ragworm, sandworm dan Amphipoda crustacean. “Sebagian besar makhluk yang ada hanya pernah dilihat oleh beberapa spesialis dan ahli biologi kelautan. Mereka semua tinggal di laut dingin di daerah terpencil di dalam lingkaran Artik.”

Bahkan, Semenov mengaku beberapa diantara hewan itu tidak dapat dilihat dengan mata telanjang.
